Wairoa is a manufacturing and farming service town on the East Coast of the North Island. It is located on the northern shores of Hawke Bay at the mouth of the Wairoa River, west of the Mahia Peninsula - approx. 100 kilometres north of Napier and is a similar distance south of Gisborne.
Wairoa has a very wide river running through the centre of town and has a historical lighthouse re-positioned on the river bank opposite the main shopping area.
The Wairoa Lighthouse was originally on Portland Island (off the Mahia Peninsula) and was one of the earliest lighthouse sites in New Zealand. It is built from solid kauri and was in use from 1878 to 1958. In 1955 a new light on a steel tower was built due to rotting timber and the old lighthouse was moved to its riverside position in 1961. It was the last lighthouse to use kerosene lamps and clockwork mechanisms.
